MEMBERSHIP TYPES AND CATEGORIES

The Malta Institute of Accountants has three tiers of membership, namely Associate, Member and Fellow. All members have the same rights and obligations irrelevant of the tier they fall into. The difference between Associate and Member lies in the level of experience whereas the difference between Member and Fellow lies in seniority. As you move from one membership level to the next, you will be eligible to write the relevant initials after your name and will receive the relevant certificate of membership. 

ASSOCIATE MEMBER

This is the entry level of Membership.
Eligibility Criteria
An individual shall be eligible to be admitted to the Institute as an Associate member only if he/she:
(a) Has successfully completed any of the following qualifications (these being referred to as the main routes for membership):
(i) The Masters in Accountancy by the University of Malta; or
(ii) The ACCA qualification; or
(iii)  The ICAEW qualification; and
(b) Resides in Malta or has a permanent link with Malta.
With the exception of (a(i)) above, it is not a requirement to have successfully completed the local variants examinations.

AIA (Short for Associate of the Malta Institute of Accountants). 
Applying for AIA Membership
Fill in and submit the AIA membership application form. Vetted application forms are subject to Council's approval. A formal notification will be sent to you to communicate Council's decision. 
Applicable Fees
Refer to the following link to view the relevant applicable Membership Fees.
Certificate of Membership
This will be presented to you during the annual New Members' Ceremony.  
Moving to the next tier of Membership
You can upgrade from an Associate Member to a Member when you have obtained 3 years of work experience, one of which must be after completion of studies.

MEMBER

The second level of Membership
Eligibility Criteria
An individual or Associate member shall be eligible to be classified as a Member of the Institute only if he/she: 
(a) Has satisfied all the requirements of an Associate as stipulated above along with the successful completion of the local variants examinations; and
(b) Has satisfied all the requirements to qualify for the warrant of a Certified Public Accountant in terms of the Accountancy Profession Act, 1979; and
(c) Has undergone a period of accountancy experience of not less than three years, of which at least one year must have been gained after the obtainment of the accountancy qualification; and
(d) Has obtained the relevant practical experience elements as set by the Institute; and
(e) Resides in Malta or has a permanent link with Malta.

MIA (Short for Member of the Malta Institute of Accountants). 
Applying for MIA Membership, Applicable Fees & Certificate of Membership
Direct Admission as a Member: 
Fill in and submit the MIA membership application form. Vetted application forms are subject to Council's approval. A formal notification will be sent to you to communicate Council's decision. 
An initial registration fee and the pro-rata subscription fee for the year need to be paid upon submission of the membership application form. Refer to the following link to view relevant rates.
The Certificate of Membership will be presented to you during the annual New Members' Ceremony.
Upgrading from an AIA to MIA: 
Contact the Institute for more information. 
Moving to the next tier of Membership
A member who has been an MIA member for a continuous period of 5 years will be eligible for an upgrade to Fellow Member in line with the Institute's Bye-Laws, Policies and Regulations.

The third level of Membership
Eligibility Criteria
Five years of continuous membership as an MIA member in line with the Institute's Bye-Laws, Policies and Regulations.

FIA
Applying for FIA Membership & Applicable Fees
There is no need to apply for this level of membership. The Institute undertakes an exercise on an annual basis to determine who is eligible for this upgrade. A formal notification will be sent to you to inform you accordingly. 
No fees apply in relation to the upgrade process.  
Certificate of Membership
The Institute will be in touch with you when the Certificate of Membership is ready for collection. 

Membership Categories

There are various circumstances where can fall into any of these categories:

Overseas Members
A member of the Institute residing abroad for a period exceeding twelve months shall be eligible for an overseas member status, subject that he/she has a permanent link with Malta. Such status shall entitle the member to a 50% reduction on the annual subscription fee while retaining all his/her membership rights. The eligibility criteria shall be reviewed by the Institute on an annual basis.
Retired Members
A member of the Institute who is 65 years of age shall be eligible for a retired member status subject that they had registered their status with the Institute. Such status shall exempt the member from paying the annual subscription fee while retaining all his/her membership rights.
Honorary Members
Members who were designated such title as approved by Council.  Not entitled to pay the annual subscription fee.
Lapsed Member
A member who has lost membership privileges because of unpaid membership fees in line with the Disciplinary (Non-Payment of Fees) Regulations.

Suspended Members
A member whose membership has been revoked. To be re-instated as a member, a suspended member shall apply for membership just like any other person, this being in line with the Disciplinary (Non-Payment of Fees) Regulations.
