MEMBERSHIP TYPES AND CATEGORIES

The Malta Institute of Accountants has four categories of membership, namely IAIA - International Associates, AIA - Associates, MIA - Members and FIA - Fellows. All Members have the same obligations, rights and benefits.

INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATE MEMBER (IAIA)


Eligibility Criteria
An individual shall be eligible to be admitted as an International Associate member only if he/she:
(a) is of good standing;

(b) does not fulfil the criteria for eligibility as an Associate member (AIA);

(c) has successfully attained a professional accountancy qualification or equivalent conferred by a professional body or a degree issued by an educational institution;

(d) is a member of a professional accountancy/audit body in the country of origin or otherwise which is a member of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC);

(e) has a valid work permit (where applicable);

(f) is in employment and undertaking accountancy/audit related work in Malta; and

(g) at the time of submission of the application resides in Malta and intends to so reside until the end of that same calendar year or indefinitely.

IAIA (Short for International Associate of the Malta Institute of Accountants). 
Applying for IAIA Membership
Fill in and submit the IAIA membership application form along with the required supporting documentation. 
An initial registration fee and the pro-rata subscription fee for the year need to be paid upon submission of the membership application form. Refer to the following link to view relevant rates.
Vetted application forms are subject to Council's approval. A formal notification will be sent to you to communicate Council's decision.

Proof  of Membership
Membership will be valid till the end of the year. A confirmation letter is issued when membership is approved. 
Renewal from one year to the next will be subject to review.  The eligibility criteria must continue being met in order for the membership to be renewed.

ASSOCIATE MEMBER (AIA)

This is the entry-level membership, which can lead to an upgrade to Member (MIA) and eventually to Fellow (FIA).
Eligibility Criteria
An  individual shall be eligible to be admitted as an Associate member only if he/she:
(a) is of good standing;
(b) has successfully completed any of the following qualifications:
(i) a professional accountancy degree conferred by the University of Malta; or
(ii) a qualification equivalent to the professional accountancy degree conferred by the University of Malta which is obtained through a recognised educational institution, such as ACCA and ACA; and
(c) resides in Malta or has a permanent link with Malta.


Provided that, in the case of (b) above, the qualification obtained must be one which is recognised by the Accountancy Board for the purpose of obtaining the warrant to practice the accountancy profession in Malta.
Provided further, in the case of b(ii) above, it is not a requirement to have successfully completed the local variant examinations, but it is a requirement to prove membership of a professional accountancy/audit body in the country of origin or otherwise. Acceptance of such proof remains at all times at the discretion of the Institute.

AIA (Short for Associate of the Malta Institute of Accountants). 
Applying for AIA Membership
Fill in and submit the AIA membership application form along with the required supporting documentation.

Certificate of Membership
This will be presented to you during the annual New Members' Ceremony.  
Moving to the next tier of Membership
An Associate member who has attained the warrant of a Certified Public Accountant  and has been compliant with CPE and other obligations will be eligible for an upgrade to "Member" in line with the Members and Member Firms Bye-Law.

MEMBER (MIA)

This is the second level of membership, attainable either through direct admission or upgrade, and can eventually lead to an upgrade to Fellow (FIA).


Eligibility Criteria
An individual or Associate member shall be eligible to be classified as a Member of the Institute only if he/she:
(a) is of good standing;
(b) has attained the warrant of a Certified Public Accountant in terms of the Accountancy Profession Act and related Regulations;
(c) has successfully completed the minimum annual CPE requirements and has been compliant with respect to other obligations emanating from the Institute’s Statue and Bye-Laws or other applicable regulatory measures (where applicable); and
(d) resides in Malta or has a permanent link with Malta.

MIA (Short for Member of the Malta Institute of Accountants). 

Applying for MIA Membership, Applicable Fees & Certificate of Membership
Direct Admission as a Member: 
Fill in and submit the MIA membership application form along with the required supporting documentation. 
An initial registration fee and the pro-rata subscription fee for the year need to be paid upon submission of the membership application form. Refer to the following link to view relevant rates.
Vetted application forms are subject to Council's approval. A formal notification will be sent to you to communicate Council's decision. 
The Certificate of Membership will be presented to you during the annual New Members' Ceremony.

Upgrading from an AIA to MIA: 
There is no need to apply for this upgrade. The Institute undertakes an exercise on an annual basis to determine who is eligible for such upgrade. A formal notification will be sent to you to inform you accordingly. No fees apply in relation to the upgrade process.
The Institute will be in touch with you when the Certificate of Membership is ready for collection.
Moving to the next tier of Membership
A member who has been an MIA member for a continuous period of 5 years and has been compliant with CPE and other obligations will be eligible for an upgrade to Fellow Member in line with the Members and Members Firms Bye-Law.

fellow MEMBER (FIA)

This is the third level of membership attainable through an upgrade.
Eligibility Criteria
A Member shall be eligible to become a Fellow Member of the Institute only if he/she:
(a)   is of good standing; 
(b)  has been a continuous Member of the Institute (MIA) for a period of five (5) years;
(c)   has successfully completed the minimum annual CPE requirements;
(d)   has been compliant with his/her other obligations emanating from the Institute’s Statute and Bye-Laws or other applicable regulatory measures during this period; and
(e)   resides in Malta or has a permanent link with Malta.

FIA (Short for Fellow of the Malta Institute of Accountants). 
Applying for FIA Membership & Applicable Fees
There is no need to apply for this level of membership. The Institute undertakes an exercise on an annual basis to determine who is eligible for this upgrade. A formal notification will be sent to you to inform you accordingly. No fees apply in relation to the upgrade process.  
Certificate of Membership
The Institute will be in touch with you when the Certificate of Membership is ready for collection. 

Membership STATUSES

Overseas Members
An AIA, MIA and FIA who is residing abroad for a period exceeding twelve months is eligible for an overseas member status, subject that he/she has a permanent link with Malta. Such status entitles the member to a 50% reduction on the annual subscription fee while retaining all membership rights. A member becomes eligible for this scheme if the minimum residency period is met by 1 January of a calendar year. Eligibility is reviewed annually by the Institute.


Retired Members
An IAIA, AIA, MIA and FIA who is 65 years of age is eligible for a retired member status subject that he/she registers his/her status with the Institute. Such status exempts the member from paying the annual subscription fee while retaining all membership rights. A member becomes eligible for this scheme if the eligible age is reached as of 1 January of a calendar year.


Honorary Members
Members who were bestowed such title as approved by Council.  Not entitled to pay the annual subscription fee.
Lapsed Member
A member who has lost membership privileges because of unpaid membership fees in line with the Members and Member Firms Bye-Law.
