Roles of the Institute

Advocacy

The Institute is the voice of the accountancy profession in Malta providing professional guidance, technical support and continuing professional education to over 4,000 accountants. It is committed to attract talented individuals to the profession and invests heavily in the process of educating prospective accountants. The Institute also helps to promote a proper understanding of the role and the value of the accountancy profession to the wider Maltese public in general and, in particular, to the local business community.

Standard Setting

The Institute is a full member body of Accountancy Europe and IFAC (International Federation of Accountants) and is an active participant in initiatives that are spearheaded by these Federations. This participation enables the Institute to influence the development of regulatory and technical matters that are relevant to the profession through the submission of comment letters and participation in specialised working groups. The Institute is the underlying driver of local regulatory and technical initiatives that are implemented. The Institute’s representatives on the Accountancy Board ensure that Members’ interests in all local regulatory and standard setting initiatives are safeguarded. Via its Committees and Task Forces, the Institute creates a forum where leading thinkers and practitioners come together to share their views and discuss regulatory initiatives and invitations to comment on local, regional and international initiatives. In this capacity the Institute is a leading contributor to the regulatory initiatives in the accounting world on a local, regional and international dimension on which it is asked to comment on a regular basis.

Continuous Professional Development Outreach Activities

In the ever changing regulatory and technical landscapes Members need to continually update their understanding. The Institute is best positioned to understand Members’ continuing educational needs and MIA organised CPE events are specifically designed to equip Members with updated or news skills that they need to ensure a successful practice.
