BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Ethics embody all that is rational and good in the conduct of human beings. Ethics are not a reference book but a way of living without double standards. In time the meaning has become rather elastic and relative to one’s needs. It is time to rethink and revert to the original meaning. There are no two ways or several versions of ethics. One is either willing to comply in every situation or not. We are delivering this session in the context of our profession and whilst the above applies, our profession goes further in guiding us to further our choice to be ethical with detailed but not exhaustive guidance under the conceptual framework. Ethics is about being discerning enough to identify threats, evaluate them and build the necessary safeguards around them if not remove the threat to ethical behaviour entirely thus preserving the ethical status.

SPECIFIC TOPICS TO BE COVERED DURING THE SESSION

  • The IESBA code of Ethics
  • The fundamental principles of ethics for professional accountants
  • The ethics of independence
  • Professional judgement
  • Professional scepticism and other pillars of our practice.

Why is the session of relevance to our members?

We address this subject in the context of our profession, but the session will not be limited to practice but to the approach to good conduct in general business. Most members of society and not only of the Institute of Accountants or the accountancy profession interact with accountants, or their deliverables and they will therefore benefit from the efforts that the profession makes to promote the subject of ethics in whatever one does. The session is therefore of interest to all and sundry.

    Target Audience
