    This in-person session is being organised jointly by the MIA and the Accountancy Board to support practitioners in strengthening their understanding and implementation of ISQM 1, while also providing clearer insight into current expectations and practical considerations. It will bring together practitioners and representatives from the Accountancy Board for an engaging discussion on the effective and consistent application of the standard.

    The session will offer a practical refresher on the key principles and requirements of ISQM 1, together with an overview of the expectations of the Accountancy Board during audit quality reviews. It will also cover common challenges encountered in practice and examples of good practices.

    The event will conclude with a panel discussion addressing practical questions and topics submitted in advance by practitioners, with the aim of providing further clarity and actionable insights on commonly encountered issues.

    To help ensure that the discussion addresses the areas most relevant to practitioners, attendees are encouraged to submit any questions or topics they would like addressed to technical@miamalta.org by no later than Monday, 1st June.

    Speakers' Profiles

    Karen Sultana is the Head of the Accountancy Board's Quality Assurance Unit within the Ministry for Finance. She is a certified public accountant and holds a practising certificate in auditing with the Accountancy Board. She is also a fellow of the Malta Institute of Accountants.
    Jeanette Agius is a Certified Public Accountant and holds a practising certificate in auditing. She is an ACCA fellow and a member of the Malta Institute of Accountants. She has experience in audit, taxation, and regulatory oversight, and currently serves as a Quality Assurance Reviewer with the Ministry for Finance
    Jean Paul Debono, a Certified Public Accountant and Practicing Auditor, founding partner at Quazar, a multi-disciplinary Accountancy, Audit and CSP firm in Malta heading the Accounts & Advisory department. With a background in global client service and a focus on accounting, tax, and advisory, Jean Paul is recognized for his strategic business guidance. He's a distinguished member of ACCA, the Malta Institute of Accountants and the Malta Institute of Taxation, also contributing significantly to professional communities by serving as Chairman and Non-Executive Directorship roles across various companies.
    Anita Grech is a Partner at Mazars Malta and is specialised in audits of PIEs, listed entities, financial services and has extensive experience working on local and international groups of companies. She previously worked with one of the Big Four firms and has also gained experience working in the hospitality and healthcare industry. Anita is part of firm’s technical team and involved in internal training on audit methodology and is also deputy chairperson on the MIA’s sustainable finance committee. Anita is a Certified Public Accountant and Practicing Auditor by profession.
    Renzo Farrugia leads Compass Malta, delivering independent quality reviews and technical support since 2008. A dynamic and respected voice in the profession, he is a sought-after speaker and trainer. Renzo holds a practising certificate in auditing, is an MIA Fellow, and MBA graduate of Henley Business School, UK.

    Participation is highly recommended as it will provide attendees with the opportunity to directly interact with the regulators.

    Speakers' Profiles

    Karen Sultana
    Ms. Karen Sultana is the Head of the Accountancy Board's Quality Assurance Unit within the Ministry for Finance. She is a certified public accountant and holds a practising certificate in auditing with the Accountancy Board. She is also a fellow of the Malta Institute of Accountants.
    Shawn Falzon
    Shawn Falzon is the Assurance Leader at EY Malta and has been with EY since 2000. He brings over twenty five years of professional experience across a wide range of industries, including insurance, banking, real estate, gaming, telecommunications, and hospitality. He serves a number of public interest entities and high profile clients and has extensive experience leading complex audit engagements, including listed entities, public interest entities and cross border groups, as well as groups preparing for local and US IPOs. Shawn is an officer and Council Member of the Malta Institute of Accountants and serves as Vice Chair of its Audit and Assurance Group, where he actively contributes to the advancement of the profession and ongoing engagement with regulators and key stakeholders. He is a Certified Public Accountant, an ACCA Fellow, and holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Malta.


    Thomas Galea
    Appointed partner in October 2021, Thomas is the Head of Audit (Operations) of the Malta practice. During the past 21 years, other than in Malta, Thomas has worked within the audit function of the Irish and US KPMG offices gaining experience in several industries, particularly Banking and Private Enterprise.
