Roles of the Institute

The Institute is the voice of the accountancy profession in Malta providing professional guidance, technical support and continuing professional education to nearly 3,000 accountants. It is committed to attract talented individuals to the profession and invests heavily in the process of educating prospective accountants. The Institute also helps to promote a proper understanding of the role and the value of the accountancy profession to the wider Maltese public in general and, in particular, to the local business community.

Standard Setting

The Institute is a full member body of FEE (Federation of European Accountants) and IFAC (International Federation of Accountants) and is an active participant in initiatives that are spearheaded by these Federations. This participation enables the Institute to influence the development of regulatory and technical matters that are relevant to the profession through the submission of comment letters and participation in specialised working groups. The Institute is the underlying driver of local regulatory and technical initiatives that are implemented. The Institute’s representatives on the Accountancy Board ensure that members’ interests in all local regulatory and standard setting initiatives are safeguarded. Via its Committees and Task Forces, the Institute creates a forum where leading thinkers and practitioners come together to share their views and discuss regulatory initiatives and invitations to comment on local, regional and international initiatives. In this capacity the Institute is a leading contributor to the regulatory initiatives in the accounting world on a local, regional and international dimension on which it is asked to comment on a regular basis.

Continuous Professional Development Outreach Activities

In the ever changing regulatory and technical landscapes members need to continually update their understanding. The Institute is best positioned to understand members’ continuing educational needs and MIA organised CPE events are specifically designed to equip members with updated or news skills that they need to ensure a successful practice.
See our full list of upcoming CPEs here.

Practice Support

The Institute is a continued source of guidance to its members through its briefing notes, guidance notes, technical releases along with other publications such as the technical e-newsletter and the Journal. The Institute also offer technical support to its Members via its technical team and the ACCA helpdesk.

Networking Opportunities

The Institute continuously organise educational events where Members can meet up and network between each other. The annual social event is a great opportunity for Members to mingle in a relaxed environment.
