Speakers' Profiles

Janis Hyzler joined Zampa Partners in December 2018 and is an Audit Director within the Audit & Assurance team, overseeing a portfolio of clients from various industries.
A qualified accountant and auditor, Janis graduated from the University of Malta in 2010 with a Bachelor of Accountancy (Honours) Degree. She brings over 14 years of experience in the financial services sector, having kicked off her career at a Big Four audit firm. Her professional journey includes international assignments in the U.S.A and Australia, which enabled Janis to expand her knowledge base within the financial services sector.
In addition to her audit background, Janis held an accounting role within a corporate service provider, where she managed the financial reporting for clients spanning multiple industries.

Daniel Brincat is an Audit Director at KPMG Malta. Since joining KPMG Malta in 2010, Daniel has gained experience in a variety of industries, particularly financial services and private enterprise. Throughout his career, Daniel also managed to work on secondment opportunities with KPMG Guernsey and KPMG Toronto. Today, Daniel is predominantly focused on Private Enterprise clients, with a broad portfolio of local and international entities and groups operating across various industries.

Join us for an insightful in-person session on ISQM 1, bringing together practitioners and representatives from the Accountancy Board for a practical and informative discussion. This session is designed to go back to basics, beginning with a clear overview and explanation of ISQM 1, followed by guidance on the expectations of the Accountancy Board and what practitioners are expected to demonstrate in practice. Key risks and common areas of concern will also be explored in detail. The session will conclude with an engaging panel discussion, where a series of pre-determined questions will be addressed by the panelists to provide further clarity and practical insight.

Speakers' Profiles

Karen Sultana is the Head of the Accountancy Board's Quality Assurance Unit within the Ministry for Finance. She is a certified public accountant and holds a practising certificate in auditing with the Accountancy Board. She is also a fellow of the Malta Institute of Accountants.

Jeanette Agius is a Certified Public Accountant and holds a practising certificate in auditing. She is an ACCA fellow and a member of the Malta Institute of Accountants. She has experience in audit, taxation, and regulatory oversight, and currently serves as a Quality Assurance Reviewer with the Ministry for Finance

Jean Paul Debono, a Certified Public Accountant and Practicing Auditor, founding partner at Quazar, a multi-disciplinary Accountancy, Audit and CSP firm in Malta heading the Accounts & Advisory department. With a background in global client service and a focus on accounting, tax, and advisory, Jean Paul is recognized for his strategic business guidance. He's a distinguished member of ACCA, the Malta Institute of Accountants and the Malta Institute of Taxation, also contributing significantly to professional communities by serving as Chairman and Non-Executive Directorship roles across various companies.

Anita Grech is a Partner at Mazars Malta and is specialised in audits of PIEs, listed entities, financial services and has extensive experience working on local and international groups of companies. She previously worked with one of the Big Four firms and has also gained experience working in the hospitality and healthcare industry. Anita is part of firm’s technical team and involved in internal training on audit methodology and is also deputy chairperson on the MIA’s sustainable finance committee. Anita is a Certified Public Accountant and Practicing Auditor by profession.

Renzo Farrugia leads Compass Malta, delivering independent quality reviews and technical support since 2008. A dynamic and respected voice in the profession, he is a sought-after speaker and trainer. Renzo holds a practising certificate in auditing, is an MIA Fellow, and MBA graduate of Henley Business School, UK.

Shawn Falzon

Shawn Falzon is the Assurance Leader at EY Malta and has been with EY since 2000. He brings over twenty five years of professional experience across a wide range of industries, including insurance, banking, real estate, gaming, telecommunications, and hospitality.He serves a number of public interest entities and high profile clients and has extensive experience leading complex audit engagements, including listed entities, public interest entities and cross border groups, as well as groups preparing for local and US IPOs.Shawn is an officer and Council Member of the Malta Institute of Accountants and serves as Vice Chair of its Audit and Assurance Group, where he actively contributes to the advancement of the profession and ongoing engagement with regulators and key stakeholders.He is a Certified Public Accountant, an ACCA Fellow, and holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Malta.

Thomas Galea

Appointed partner in October 2021, Thomas is the Head of Audit (Operations) of the Malta practice. During the past 21 years, other than in Malta, Thomas has worked within the audit function of the Irish and US KPMG offices gaining experience in several industries, particularly Banking and Private Enterprise.

Mirko Rapa is a tax partner at PwC Malta and provides tax advice to a wide and varied portfolio of clients. Over the last 24 years has provided tax advice to companies operating in a number of sectors and individuals taking up residence in Malta. Mirko has also been involved in a number of national initiatives when it comes to PMLFT matters and is also the Risk Management partner of PwC Malta.

Giles Schembri is a Partner at KPMG in Malta and apart from being an audit and assurance leader, he currently spearheads audit quality initiatives, leads root-cause-analysis projects, sits on the Firm’s Executive Management Committee, is the country leader for Quality and Risk Management and is also the Firm’s MLRO and Compliance Principal. Outside the Firm, Giles is the deputy chair on the Ethics Committee at the Malta Institute of Accountants and also sits on the Gaming Committee of the same institute.

Building on previous sessions delivered by the Quality Assurance Unit, we will explore key weaknesses and recurring issues identified by the Quality Assurance Unit in relation to the above topics, together with practical solutions to enhance audit quality. John Debattista is a Certified Public Accountant and Registered Auditor with over 20 years of experience in audit and assurance. Following a decade in a mid-tier audit firm, he co-founded Zampa Debattista, where he led the Audit and Assurance function as well as the Corporate Reporting Advisory team. John has extensive teaching experience, delivering lectures on audit and financial reporting for final stages of ACCA and ACA qualifications through the ICAEW (Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales). He has taught the ACCA Diploma in IFRS (DipIFR) and frequently speaks at audit and financial reporting seminars organized by various institutes in Malta. John also served as MLRO (Money Laundering Reporting Officer) in his previous firm, with a focus on AML compliance and risk management. His expertise spans the financial services, gaming, and hospitality sectors. He has worked internationally on specialized assignments in cities such as Zurich, Bucharest, Vienna, and London. In 2024, John joined Deloitte’s audit function to further his impact in the field.

Neil Maniscalco is a Certified Public Accountant and Registered Auditor. He is a Director within the Audit and Assurance function at DFK Malta and in the past has held different positions within the audit department of one of the Big Four. Neil has practical knowledge and experience in auditing companies in various industries including manufacturing, retail, hospitality, property and IT. Neil also sits on the MIA audit committee.

Joanne Saliba brings over 20 years of expertise in auditing and financial oversight. She joined PwC Malta’s assurance division in 2002 after obtaining an honours degree in Accountancy from the University of Malta. She is a fellow member of the Malta Institute of Accountants, a Certified Public Accountant, and holds a practising certificate in auditing.
Joanne has successfully led audit teams on a wide range of complex projects, fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation. Her leadership has spanned diverse sectors, with a particular focus on asset management. Since 2006, she has specialised exclusively in investment management, working with both local and international clients, including collective investment schemes and investment service providers.
Her international experience includes audit secondments to PwC offices in Washington and Milan, adding to her extensive knowledge and expertise in the field.

The session explains common findings that the QAU has identified when conducting reviews on completed audit engagements. Throughout this session we will be discussing the key findings and observations as indicated in the Accountancy Board’s annual report and common pitfalls of SME audits.

Speaker's Profile

Mr Roderick Falzon is a certified public accountant and holds a practicing certificate in auditing. He holds an ACCA professional qualification and is a fellow of the Malta Institute of Accountants. He also holds a B. Com (Hons) Management degree from the University of Malta. He worked for a number of years with one of the Big Four audit firms. Since 2014, he has been working as audit quality assurance reviewer in the Quality Assurance Unit within the Ministry for Finance where he performs quality assurance visits to sole practitioners and audit firms. He also participates in one of the colleges within the Committee of European Auditing Oversight Bodies.
