The Malta Institute of Accountants was formed in 1942. It is a founder member of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) and a member of the European Federation (FEE).

The Institute is modelled similarly to equivalent bodies in the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth and this implies two features which are not always shared by other European accountancy bodies:

The Institute offers a route to qualification, holding a complete set of professional examinations every six months.

Its membership spans all parts of the profession and is not limited to those members currently engaged in public practice.

The Institute is responsible for fostering the profession and for maintaining quality, typically through the provisions of Continuing Professional Education and by monitoring compliance with ethical, accounting and auditing standards.
