Legal control of the profession rests with the Accountancy Board, a Government body appointed in terms of the Accountancy Profession Act 1979. The Board issues two warrants:

Graduate accountants with three years experience qualify for the warrant of Certified Public Accountant.

Three years specific experience in auditing is required for the second warrant, that of Certified Public Accountant and Auditor.

The Institute's examinations are recognised by the Accountancy Board for the granting of warrants.
